The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority is a public sector organization based in Egremont, Cumbria, England, charged with leading the cleanup of the United Kingdom’s former nuclear sites on behalf of the government. Its remit centers on decommissioning activities that are safe, secure, and cost effective, with a focus on protecting people, communities, and the environment. Currently responsible for 18 sites—including the early fleet of nuclear power stations, research centres, and Sellafield, which holds the largest radioactive inventory and presents the most complex decommissioning challenges—the NDA also plans to add seven advanced gas-cooled reactors to its portfolio, expanding to 24 sites over the next decade. As owners of one of Europe’s largest decommissioning and remediation programs, the NDA emphasizes leading the work across its group and shaping the strategy for its execution. 

Its work aims to deliver best value for the UK taxpayer by reducing the highest hazards and risks while maintaining safe, secure, and environmentally responsible operations. The organization also supports government aspirations for the UK to be a global leader in the civil nuclear sector. Through its portfolio-wide leadership, the NDA coordinates decommissioning activities and guides the program’s strategic direction.
