The NSF NCAR Earth Observing Laboratory (EOL) is a research unit formed in 2005 and one of five laboratories within the National Center for Atmospheric Research, a Federally Funded Research and Development Center under the National Science Foundation. Based in Boulder, Colorado, EOL provides leadership in observing facilities, field project support, and data services to advance understanding of the Earth system. It deploys NSF's Lower Atmospheric Observing Facilities to support observational campaigns ranging from single-investigator studies to large, multi-institution efforts, across the United States and internationally. Its customers include scientists from universities, NCAR, and government agencies, with activities that also support education. A central part of its mission is to develop the next generation of observing facilities and to manage and archive data from past campaigns it has supported. It operates as a small to mid-sized research unit based in Boulder, Colorado.
