The North Carolina State Bar is a government agency established in 1933 by the North Carolina General Assembly to regulate the legal profession in the state. It regulates roughly 30,000 licensed lawyers and operates from Raleigh, North Carolina. The Bar is governed by a 61-member council of lawyers elected by their peers, with three non-lawyer public representatives appointed by the governor and other officials; daily operations are conducted by a staff of more than 80 professionals.

Its core regulatory function is investigating and prosecuting attorneys who violate the Bar's ethics rules. It also promotes lawyer and paralegal competency, adopts the Rules of Professional Conduct, counsels on compliance, resolves fee disputes, prevents unlicensed practice, and provides redress to clients harmed by attorney theft, all in the interest of administering justice. In 2026, the Bar formed a partnership with Smokeball to provide trust accounting technology at no cost.
