Noranda Alumina LLC is a mid-sized chemical manufacturing facility based in Gramercy, Louisiana, operating along the Mississippi River in St. James Parish. The plant uses the Bayer process to extract alumina from bauxite provided by its sister company Noranda Bauxite Ltd. in St. Ann, Jamaica, with an annual production capacity of about 1.2 million metric tons. External groups have, on multiple occasions, alleged violations of federal and state hazardous waste laws related to mercury releases at the Gramercy facility, with reports appearing in 2019 and 2022. In 2016, Gränges AB acquired the U.S. plants previously operated by Noranda Aluminum.
