NGI is an independent research centre focused on geotechnical engineering and the engineering geosciences. It conducts applied research and consulting to support the design and sustainability of infrastructure on land and at sea, addressing environmental technology, contaminated soil, and natural hazards such as landslides and avalanches. By integrating geotechnics, geology, and geophysics, NGI aims to produce knowledge that helps governments and industry manage risks related to climate, environment, energy, and hazards, with public authorities and private sector customers in Norway and abroad. Headquartered in Oslo, the institute operates a branch in Trondheim, an avalanche station on Mount Strynefjellet, and geotechnical facilities in Houston with an office in Perth, reflecting its international scope and collaboration with partners worldwide. NGI is described as a private independent foundation providing consulting and research services in the engineering geosciences. In October 2024 NGI opened a Tromsø office to better support northern regions in preparing for natural hazards.
