New York State Thruway Authority operates and maintains a large toll-funded transportation network in the state, providing dependable mobility for both commuters and freight. The system spans about 570 miles and includes 815 bridges and 27 service areas, connecting major cities, rural communities, and tourist destinations. In 2020 it moved to fully cashless tolling to improve efficiency and traveler convenience. Based in Albany, New York, the authority employs hundreds of staff to oversee this critical corridor. One-third of Thruway traffic comes from out of state, underscoring its regional importance as it links a set of interstates including I-87, I-90, I-95, I-287, and I-190. The Governor Thomas E. Dewey Thruway was built in the 1950s, making the network one of the nation's longstanding toll roads.
