The New Jersey Planning Officials is a small nonprofit operating in the architecture and planning field, based in Plainfield, New Jersey. Founded in 1938, it aims to educate and inform citizens who serve on municipal planning boards and zoning boards of adjustment, particularly those without formal planning or zoning backgrounds. It is the state’s largest and most active organization supporting planning and zoning board members, drawing on widespread volunteer involvement from recognized land-use experts who provide programs, articles, and materials at no cost to the organization.

The organization serves a broad network of members in the architecture and planning community, including municipal boards and a wide range of professionals such as planners, attorneys, engineers, and architects who are dues-paying members, along with libraries and corporations. Its membership footprint spans nearly all New Jersey counties, with all but two counties participating as dues-paying members. The work is supported by volunteers who contribute expertise in land use, producing content and education without charge to NJPO.
