National Water Research Institute (NWRI) is a science-oriented nonprofit established in 1991 to improve water quality, protect public health and the environment, and develop safe, new sources of water. It works with researchers across the United States, drawing on facilities at universities and water agencies, and is governed by a Board of Directors drawn from California water and wastewater utilities. The organization is based in Fountain Valley, California, and functions as a small to midsize nonprofit focused on advancing water-related science through collaboration. NWRI maintains a broad network of partnerships, having collaborated with more than 100 organizations worldwide to support water research, education, and outreach. Its member agencies and utilities, including Inland Empire Utilities Agency, Irvine Ranch Water District, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, Orange County Sanitation District, Orange County Water District, and West Basin Municipal Water District, guide its programs. Since 1994 it has hosted the Athalie Richardson Irvine Clarke Prize, and in May 2022 the board elected environmental attorney Steven J. Elie as chair.
