The National WASP WWII Museum was founded by WASP family and supporters and maintained based solely on the support & donations of private supporters. The Museum is located on Avenger Field in Sweetwater, TX, where the women trained before their orders. The WASP, Women Airforce Service Pilots, were the first women to fly military aircrafts. Although the women flew and trained like military, the women were not seen as military, therefore not receiving any benefits of their service. The women were able to campaign for veteran status, and they achieved this in 1972 with President Carter signing the legislation granting them military veteran status. Today, the Museum's main mission is to Preserve the History, Promote the Legacy, and Protecting the Airfield.
