The National Library of New Zealand is the country's national library, based in Wellington. It traces its formation to 1965, when the Alexander Turnbull Library, the General Assembly Library, and the National Library Service were brought together. Its mandate, set out in the National Library of New Zealand Act 2003, emphasizes collecting, preserving, and making accessible documents—especially those related to New Zealand—and collaborating with other libraries and international partners.

It maintains the Crown’s documentary heritage collections, principally the Alexander Turnbull Library, and seeks to maximize their use for research, education, and public access by providing related services, including information resources and bibliographic and school services, and by advising the Minister on library matters. In September 2025, it announced a partnership with Canterbury Museum to collaborate on sharing historical information about a monument.
