The National Association of School Nurses is a nonprofit specialty nursing organization that represents school nurses exclusively and was incorporated in 1979. Based in Silver Spring, Maryland, NASN serves a national network with about 16,000 members and 50 affiliates, including the District of Columbia and overseas. Its mission is to advance the specialty practice of school nursing to improve the health and academic success of all students. NASN targets school nurses and related health and education stakeholders by providing guidance for practice and by defining the professional role of school nurses. In 2024 it released the School Nursing Practice Framework to guide and define how the role evolves within student health and education settings. In 2026 NASN formed partnerships to strengthen vaccine communications in diverse health settings with the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases and the National Association of County and City Officials.
