NAFEO is a United States–based nonprofit umbrella organization that represents the presidents and chancellors of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and Predominantly Black Institutions (PBIs). Established in 1969, the organization aims to place equal opportunity in higher education on the national agenda and to advocate for policies and practices that preserve and enhance HBCUs and PBIs. Its membership spans public, private, and land-grant institutions across two-year, four-year, graduate, and professional programs, ensuring a collective voice for a diverse range of Black higher-education institutions. The group operates within the higher education sector, serving institutions rather than individual students, and seeks to increase participation of Black stakeholders in policy formulation and implementation at the national level. NAFEO is based in the United States and maintains an online presence via its website, nafo.org. In recent years, the organization has engaged in collaborative efforts, such as partnerships with related organizations to support transfer pathways between community colleges and HBCUs to improve college completion rates.
