The Museum of Ventura County is a regional cultural institution in San Buenaventura, California, focused on presenting history, art, and culture through exhibitions and related experiences that foster curiosity and community connection. Its origins date to 1913, when it opened in the Ventura County Courthouse with a collection donated by Dr. Cephas Bard; the museum later relocated to Main Street and became an independent nonprofit in 1978. Over the decades it expanded its facilities and offerings, including a Phase One expansion in 2010 and the opening of the Agriculture Museum in nearby Santa Paula in 2011. The museum serves more than 50,000 visitors annually, delivering a program mix that includes exhibitions, a research library, tours, and events. It operates within the Museums, Historical Sites, and Zoos sector and partners with local organizations to broaden access and education, such as bilingual storytelling with the county library and collaborative planning initiatives. In July 2025, the institution announced leadership changes, naming Dr. Richard Rush as chair, Al Lowe as vice-chair, and Pam Eppolito as chief operating officer.
