The Morris-Jumel Mansion Museum in New York City preserves Manhattan's oldest private residence, built in 1765, and sits in the Harlem Heights area as a historic house museum that interprets three major historical periods. It began as a summer estate for British Colonel Roger Morris and his wife Mary Philipse, whose loyalist sympathies led them to leave the city at the start of the American Revolution. During the Revolutionary War, the house served as General George Washington's fall 1776 headquarters, and the nearby Battle of Harlem Heights took place in the surrounding area; Washington returned in 1790 for a cabinet dinner attended by figures such as John Adams, Abigail Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, and Henry Knox. In the 19th century the property again functioned as a summer residence for Stephen and Eliza, with Eliza later marrying Aaron Burr, and after Eliza's death the house opened as a museum in 1904 under the Daughters of the American Revolution and later as part of the Historic House Trust of New York City. Today, the site operates as part of New York City's museum- and historic-site landscape and has pursued recent collaborations and installations, including a 2021 partnership with the NYC Department of Veterans’ Services and a 2020 memorial honoring lives lost during the coronavirus pandemic.
