Based in Helena, Montana, the Montana Department of Revenue is a state government agency established in 1972. It administers more than 30 state taxes and fees, including income, natural resource and corporate taxes, and sets values for all taxable property, from agricultural land to utilities. It also oversees the state’s liquor stores and wholesale operations and enforces laws governing the sale, taxation and licensing of alcoholic beverages, while returning unclaimed property to its owners. With a diverse workforce, it aims to provide effective and responsive service to citizens, businesses and nonresidents participating in Montana’s economy, while promoting equity and integrity in taxation through uniform enforcement and protection of taxpayer rights. In addition to tax and liquor duties, the department advises the Governor, the Legislature, and the public on tax issues, and collaborates with local, state, tribal, and federal agencies to advance the public good.
