The Montana Association of Counties (MACo) is a government relations organization based in Helena, Montana, that serves Montana's county governments. Its purpose is to support county governance by promoting integrity, providing proactive leadership, and honoring Montana’s diverse communities. MACo educates and builds relationships with legislators, state officials, and local elected officials on county structure, budgeting, and operations, and it helps facilitate intergovernmental agreements and discussions around self-determination options such as charter government and functional consolidation. It informs the public through press releases sent to local media to explain county government and discusses potential tax policy considerations, including general sales tax. As a statewide association serving Montana’s 56 counties from its base in Helena, MACo operates as a small-to-mid-sized organization, and in late 2023 it pursued legal action against the state and its Department of Revenue to clarify budget-related provisions.
