Mid-Continent Public Library is the largest public library system in Missouri, serving about 800,000 residents in the Kansas City metropolitan area across Clay, Jackson, and Platte Counties. Based in Independence, Missouri, it operates 33 branches and maintains a substantial virtual branch, providing access to a broad range of resources and services. The system supports a diverse workforce delivering in-branch and online customer service as well as back-end operations across information technology, marketing, and finance. In addition to its library services, MCPL runs Square One Small Business Services to assist local entrepreneurs through free workshops and one-on-one guidance, with support from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. A December 2025 report noted that Independence planned to sell part of its City Hall site to MCPL for the construction of a new headquarters just east of Independence Square.
