MAPC is a regional planning agency that serves the 101 cities and towns in Metropolitan Boston. Located in Boston, Massachusetts, it operates within the fields of community development and urban planning to promote smart growth and regional collaboration. Its work addresses municipal management, sustainable land use, natural resource protection, transportation efficiency, a diverse housing stock, public safety, economic development, public information, and equity among residents of varied backgrounds. The organization guides its activities through MetroFuture, a regional plan that engages the public in shaping the region’s future. 

Its governance structure includes representatives from each city and town in the region, as well as gubernatorial appointees and designees from major public agencies, with eight subregions overseen by MAPC staff. In December 2025 MAPC launched the Playbook, a collaborative engagement tool introduced through a webinar to explain its purpose, features, and feedback opportunities.
