Metro Cities is a government relations organization serving Minnesota's metropolitan area, headquartered in St. Paul. Founded in 1974 as the Association of Metropolitan Municipalities, it aims to advance the shared interests of metropolitan cities across the Executive Branch, the Legislature, and the Metropolitan Council. It functions as the region's sole metro-wide advocate and monitor for issues before state government and the Metropolitan Council. The organization represents 91 member cities, comprising the majority of the region's population, and provides a forum for city officials to exchange ideas while shaping policy on more than 60 issues, including transportation, local government aids and credits, wastewater, redevelopment, and housing. By statute, Metro Cities appoints municipal members to the Metropolitan Council's TAB, TAC, and GIS boards, ensuring metropolitan cities have a formal voice on these bodies and supporting a vision of an economically strong and vibrant region.
