Menchville House is a nonprofit emergency housing facility that serves homeless women and their children. Based in the Denbigh area of Newport News, Virginia, the organization runs a forty-six-bed shelter that provides housing and supportive services for families with children up to age 18, with stays up to six months. It coordinates with other homeless service providers and social service agencies to help residents regain self-sufficiency. Founded as a 501(c)(3) organization in April 1998 by three women, Menchville House emerged to establish a shelter for homeless women and their children. It opened in an old, 18-unit building that the community helped remodel into a group home, and the first residents arrived in April 2001. Since then, about 1,000 women and their children have moved through the program toward healthier, more independent lives.
