The Mattress Recycling Council (MRC) is a nonprofit formed by the mattress industry to run the Bye Bye Mattress recycling programs in states with active mattress recycling laws—California, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Oregon. It educates industry participants about applicable regulations and assists retailers and manufacturers with registration and reporting requirements. The council collaborates with local governments, waste-management professionals, and recyclers to build an accessible and efficient mattress collection and recycling network, supporting a cleaner future. Through these efforts, each mattress contributes to reduced waste and increased material recovery. Based in Alexandria, Virginia, MRC operates within the environmental services sector and serves manufacturers, retailers, and other mattress-industry stakeholders subject to state laws. Since launching the Bye Bye Mattress program in 2015, Connecticut has recycled well over a million mattresses, underscoring the program’s impact on waste diversion, and the council has introduced SP2 to help manufacturers build mattresses more efficiently while reducing environmental impact.
