The Matanuska-Susitna Borough is a second-class borough in Alaska, incorporated in 1964. Based in Palmer, it operates a manager-form government with an elected mayor and Assembly to deliver borough-wide services to residents and businesses as a mid-sized public administration. Its services are organized as area-wide—available inside and outside the borough's incorporated cities—and non area-wide, which may be provided only outside those cities. A notable recent development is the appointment of a Fire Chief, Ben Knowles, on January 1, 2026. In 2023, the borough secured funding to acquire a 75-ton rough terrain crane for Port MacKenzie to support cargo handling. The borough has also pursued public health initiatives, launching the RQI Prehospital Healthcare Provider program in 2017.
