It would be safe to say that the Marks JCH of Bensonhurst, lovingly known as the "J" is the busiest place in southwestern Brooklyn. The Marks JCH is more than a community center. It is a destination for joyful community life, with programs that educate and inspire and services that lift people out of poverty and put them on the road to self-sufficiency and good citizenship. The Marks JCH was founded in 1927 in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. The agency has supported multiple waves of immigrants from the 1940s through 1990s, including more than 50,000 from the former Soviet Union during the 1980s. The Marks JCH has established itself as a comprehensive center for immigrant resettlement, regarded as a "best in class" organization by community partners, philanthropists, and government agencies. Immigrants from throughout New York City are encouraged by their families and fellow immigrants to seek out the Marks JCH when they arrive in the US. Now, the Marks JCH is welcoming and embracing the next generation of families; people whose parents immigrated to the US or who came to America as young children. They are returning to southern Brooklyn to raise their families and participate in community life. Through job training and placement, English classes, children and youth programs, senior services, and other educational, cultural, and social service supports, the Marks JCH is a vital lifeline. From preschool children to high school teens, from working age adults to elderly Holocaust survivors, from first time mothers to young families who are returning to the neighborhoods that sheltered their parents when they arrived as refugees. The Marks JCH touches more than 30,000 clients of all ages and stages of life each year and provides programs and services that educate and support children and teens, enable adults to obtain and retain employment, deliver social services, help seniors live active and healthy lives, and nurture and empower women.
