The Metropolitan New York Synod is the regional arm of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America for a defined territory that includes all five boroughs of New York City, Long Island, and the Lower Hudson Valley. It is organized into 18 conferences, each led by a dean who serves as a liaison between the bishop’s office and the congregations in their area. The synod covers a population of about 13.5 million and comprises 192 congregations, with baptized members numbering around 63,959 and roughly 16,009 in weekly worship. It relies on the work of around 300 pastors and more than 100 rostered lay leaders to support worship, service, and education within its Lutheran communities. The office is located in New York City, at 475 Riverside Drive, Suite 1620, and the organization is described as a small to mid-sized religious institution within the ELCA network.
