Luther Preparatory School is considered the oldest continuously operating Lutheran high school in the U.S. because it is the successor to Northwestern Preparatory School. Northwestern Prep was founded in Watertown, Wisconsin in 1865 as the prep department of Northwestern College and was given its own separate identity in 1974. Northwestern Prep merged with Martin Luther Prep (Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin) in 1995 to form Luther Prep. The school is owned and operated by the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS). The continuing mission and purpose of Luther Prep is to prepare and encourage young men and women for full-time ministry in the WELS.
