The Local Government Association (LGA) acts as the national voice for local government in the United Kingdom, collaborating with councils to support, promote, and improve local governance. As a politically led, cross-party body, it represents councils in discussions with national government and aims to shape the policy agenda on issues that affect local authorities. Its core membership covers most English councils across district, county, metropolitan and unitary authorities, as well as London boroughs and the City of London Corporation, with Welsh councils represented through the Welsh Local Government Association. The LGA runs an associate scheme for aligned organizations, including fire and rescue authorities, police and crime commissioners, and other bodies via the National Association of Local Councils. Headquartered in London, England, at 18 Smith Square, it is a sizeable organization that supports its advocacy and policy work, and in April 2026 appointed Jenny Rowlands as interim chief executive following the departure of the previous leader.
