Lifeboat Foundation is a nonprofit think tank based in Gardnerville, Nevada. Its mission centers on advancing scientific progress while addressing existential risks and the potential misuse of powerful technologies, including genetic engineering, nanotechnology, and robotics/artificial intelligence, as society moves toward the Singularity. As a mid-sized organization, it leverages a broad network of researchers to pursue programs aimed at improving humanity’s chances of survival. Its activities span efforts to counter viral threats, establish defensive nanotechnologies, and plan long-term contingencies such as self-sustaining space colonies if other safeguards fail. It maintains public engagement channels and disseminates related content, including a book and online resources. A concrete development from 2017 was the launch of the Lifespan Heroes campaign to raise funds for LEAF to continue delivering content, interviews, scientific commentaries, advocacy and more.
