LEAP, based in New Haven, Connecticut, is a nonprofit organization that provides year-round academic and social enrichment for youth in its community. Founded in 1992 by local educators, students, social workers, and community activists, the organization aims to address inequities linked to poverty by emphasizing education and stable, constructive relationships to support children and teens. It serves roughly 660 young people through two programs: the Children's Program for ages 6-12 and the Youth Development Program for ages 13-23. The Children's Program seeks to develop well-rounded individuals—strong in academics, culture, and athletics—who read actively, are socially aware, and succeed in school. The Youth Development Program focuses on building civic engagement, leadership, mentoring, effective teaching, and prudent decision-making, within the context of high-poverty urban neighborhoods.
