The Irish Repertory Theatre is a mid-sized performing arts organization based in New York City that presents Irish and Irish-American works through theater, music, and dance. Founded in 1988 by Ciarán O’Reilly and Charlotte Moore, it opened with Sean O’Casey’s The Plough and the Stars and established a permanent Chelsea home in 1995, housing a Main Stage and the W. Scott McLucas Studio. It remains the only year-round theatre company in New York City devoted exclusively to Irish and Irish-American repertoire.

The company stages both classic and contemporary Irish drama and nurtures new works that explore the Irish and Irish-American experience, while also presenting works from other cultures through an Irish sensibility. It has earned industry recognition in 2022, including Outer Critics Circle Special Achievement, a Drama Desk Award, and a Lucille Lortel Award for distinguished Irish drama and body of work. In 2026 it announced a partnership with The Apollo Theatre to expand its Transatlantic Commissions Program and reveal its 2026-2027 cohort.
