The mission of ICRD is to bridge religious considerations and international politics in support of peacebuilding.

It is often difficult to resolve violent conflict solely at the level of government-to-government intervention when religious, ethnic and tribal group identities play a key role in driving that violence. To complement traditional diplomatic efforts, ICRD employs its unique capabilities to engage the core values and belief systems at the heart of these identity conflicts.

We intervene in communal conflicts in which:
- US foreign policy has a strategic interest in the area in conflict;
- ICRD has access to relationships of trust that can be brought to bear on the problem at hand;
-Religious actors are actively involved in causing violent conflict, or are ineffectively engaged in peace processes;
-The conflict area is currently underserved;
-The work will do the most good for the most people.

ICRD believes that Bridging Religious Considerations with International Politics in Support of Peacemaking will be advanced if these four core objectives are being met:

- Decrease Religion’s role as a driver of conflict;
- Increase the capacity and number of religious peacemakers;
- Increase the role of religious clergy and laity in peacemaking;
- Increase Policy-makers’ awareness of and receptivity to the potential contributions of religious peacemakers.
