The Institute for Research on Poverty (IRP) is a university-based research center within the University of Wisconsin–Madison that conducts interdisciplinary study of the causes and consequences of poverty and inequality in the United States, including the impact of related policies and programs. It is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization located at 1180 Observatory Drive, Madison, Wisconsin. Established in 1966 by the U.S. Office of Economic Opportunity, IRP has affiliates across disciplines that formulate and test theories of poverty and inequality, develop and evaluate social policy alternatives, and analyze trends in poverty and economic well-being. As the National Poverty Research Center sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, IRP coordinates the U.S. Collaborative of Poverty Centers to improve the effectiveness of public policies affecting poverty and well-being.
