The Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa Ltd. (IDC) is a financial services company headquartered in Johannesburg, South Africa (19 Fredman Drive, Gauteng 2196), employing roughly 1,001 to 5,000 people. It was established in 1940 by the Industrial Development Corporation Act No. 22 of 1940 to develop domestic industrial capacity, with a focus on manufactured goods, in response to wartime trade disruptions. Over more than seven decades, the IDC has supported South Africa's industrial policy by funding and influencing the development of sectors such as petrochemicals, minerals beneficiation, fabricated metals, agriculture, and textiles, including large industrial projects. Its funding derives from income on loan and equity investments, exits from mature investments, and borrowings from commercial banks, development finance institutions, and other lenders. In recent years, the IDC has engaged in partnerships and initiatives to support infrastructure, manufacturing, and industrialisation, including collaborations with entities such as Fedgroup Life and the National Transmission Company of South Africa.
