InContext Design is a small design consultancy based in the United States that centers its work on user research. The firm helped develop Contextual Design, a structured process for creating products and services rooted in customer insight. Founded in 1992 by Karen Holtzblatt and Hugh Beyer, it partners with organizations on projects spanning software, websites, apps, and consumer products such as automobiles and appliances, translating deep user research into design solutions. Karen Holtzblatt also offers coaching and training to help teams apply customer data in practice. The company publishes books on Contextual Design used by companies and universities worldwide, and it has led initiatives such as The Women in Tech Retention project, established in 2014 to understand and improve retention of women in tech. Work from these initiatives includes frameworks and tools developed through international volunteer efforts, with a focus on understanding diverse teams and promoting retention and inclusive participation.
