IATSE Local One is a labor union local serving the New York entertainment industry. Its roots stretch back to 1863, with early stagehand organizing, and the local became known as the 'mother local' within the National Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, the precursor to IATSE. Historically, it has represented backstage crews, theater and opera production staff, and related workers under a framework that aims to protect labor standards and ensure professional workmanship. In 1916 Local One began applying its union stamp to scenery and equipment built in its jurisdiction, signaling that such work was union-made. In June 2021, the Metropolitan Opera announced a tentative agreement with IATSE Local One enabling many employees, including stagehands, to return to work ahead of the 2021-22 season.
