IACS is a not-for-profit membership organization comprising classification societies that establish minimum technical standards to support maritime safety and environmental protection. It contributes to safety and regulation through technical support, compliance verification, and research and development. Twelve member societies drive the classification rules and standards that cover more than 90% of the world’s cargo-carrying tonnage. Based in London, England, IACS coordinates its work through panels, expert groups, and project teams and operates a Quality System Certification Scheme to assure member compliance and uphold professional standards. It is recognized as the principal technical advisor to the International Maritime Organization.
