For residents of Huntington, NY and its surrounding communities, the Huntington Lighthouse is a familiar and treasured landmark. Its beacon has safely guided boats into Huntington Harbor for the past century. But many people aren’t aware that this unique Beaux Arts structure, completed in 1912 and currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places, once came close to demolition. That’s when a local group, Save Huntington’s Lighthouse, was formed and became the first private group in the country to successfully take over and restore an offshore lighthouse. Since then, the nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, which has evolved to become the Huntington Lighthouse Preservation Society, Inc., continues to raise funds for ongoing restoration work and enlist volunteers to ensure that the Huntington Lighthouse will guide mariners for another hundred years to come. The Huntington Lighthouse Preservation Society’s current goal is to raise the $250,000 in matching funds needed for group to be eligible to receive a grant from New York State to repair the lighthouse base and surrounding granite boulders, known as rip-rap. An additional 650 tons of rip-rap is urgently needed to protect the lighthouse from ongoing erosion.
