The Houston Aphasia Recovery Center, based in Houston, Texas, operates in the wellness and fitness services sector to support long-term recovery and wellness for people with aphasia and their families and caregivers. Conceived in 2008 to fill a gap in Houston's medical services, the center opened its doors on February 2, 2010. New participants begin with an Introductory Program that evaluates communication ability and teaches strategies for communicating with individuals who have aphasia, after which participants and their caregivers become part of the HARC community. The Wellness Program aims to strengthen language proficiency and offer practice in understanding and being understood in everyday conversations, complemented by a computer lab where participants can email, browse the web, and use software designed to support aphasia. The facility includes a large community room for socializing, and programs run on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with Mondays by appointment.
