The Hoosier Environmental Council, founded in 1983, is Indiana's largest statewide environmental organization and operates from Indianapolis. It focuses on advocacy and public education around environmental challenges and policy issues in the state. Over its more than four decades, the organization has highlighted concerns such as mercury pollution and coal ash and has contributed to protections for forests, groundwater, and lakes, as well as expanded incentives for clean energy and mass transit. Its work targets policymakers, communities, and other stakeholders in Indiana seeking stronger environmental protections and sustainable energy and transportation options. In 2023 the organization appointed Sam Carpenter as executive director, marking a recent leadership transition.
