HMML is a library-based organization located in Collegeville, Minnesota, devoted to preserving and sharing the world’s handwritten manuscripts to support understanding of the present and future. The institution concentrates its work in three core areas: digitally preserving rare and endangered manuscripts, archiving, cataloging, and sharing them online, and fostering scholarly research on the thought and cultures represented in the manuscripts. Its digitization efforts span more than 800 libraries across 40 regions and cover materials in more than 90 languages, resulting in imaging of more than 400,000 manuscripts worldwide. These resources underpin research and access for scholars, libraries, and other institutions that rely on manuscript materials.

Public access to digital manuscripts and related resources is provided free of charge through HMML’s online platform at www.vhmml.org. In 2017 HMML partnered with the Institute for Advanced Study to provide open access to approximately 15,000 digitized Zaydi manuscripts from Yemen and neighboring countries, reflecting its collaboration-driven approach to expanding access to its collections.
