Herstory Writers Network Inc operates in the writing and editing sector and is based in Centereach, New York. Twenty-three years ago, Erika Duncan brought together women who had experienced trauma and guided them to write their life stories, a process that evolved into a teaching method designed to foster empathy across readers with different education levels. It offers facilitated writing workshops for vulnerable and isolated populations in jails, schools, and communities, where participants write side by side across differences in race, class, and culture. Today, on Long Island, between 11 and 17 workshops in English and Spanish run concurrently, with some ongoing for months or years and others time-limited. The approach has begun to extend beyond the region, including engagement with the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation in Arkansas, and a notable recent development is the launch of The Elephant in the Room project at Wyandanch Memorial High School in March 2022.
