The Helmholtz Association is Germany's largest scientific research organization, comprising 18 centers pursuing long-term research that addresses state and societal needs. Based in Berlin, Germany, it operates across six strategic fields—Energy, Earth and Environment, Health, Key Technologies, Matter, and Aeronautics, Space and Transport—and is named after the 19th‑century scientist Hermann von Helmholtz. Its work aims to generate insights that help preserve and improve the foundations of human life by tackling major challenges faced by science, society, and industry. Through its network of centers and initiatives such as Helmholtz Enterprise, the association supports collaborations and knowledge transfer to advance research toward practical and applied contexts. In early 2026, Helmholtz Enterprise formed a partnership with Active Fiber Systems GmbH to accelerate the transfer of research into practical applications.
