Hebrew Free Burial Association (HFBA) is a New York-based nonprofit in the individual and family services sector that dedicates its resources to ensuring dignified, traditional Jewish funerals and burials for every Jew, regardless of financial means or religious affiliation. Its work centers on chesed shel emet, the ultimate act of lovingkindness for the deceased, addressing the needs of individuals who cannot repay the kindness themselves. The organization serves the Greater New York metropolitan area, offering a critical service that covers burial and related rites for those who might otherwise lack access. HFBA is small in size and operates from its office in Manhattan, with recent activity noting the retirement of a long-time executive after 25 years of service. The organization’s focus places it within the broader community services field, providing culturally and religiously respectful end-of-life care and burial support.
