Heber Light & Power is a community-owned energy utility serving more than 11,000 customers in the Heber Valley, Utah. It was formed in 1909 by Heber City, Midway City, and Charleston Town and operates the region's transmission and distribution system across about 100 square miles in Wasatch County. The utility's service area extends from Timber Lakes in the east to Swiss Mountain Estates and Oak Haven in the west, and reaches as far south as Daniel's Canyon and north to Coyote Lane. The company owns and operates three hydroelectric generators and three natural gas plants, with a combined generating capacity of 18 megawatts, and it supplements its resources with a power purchase agreement for Jordanelle Dam hydro capacity of up to 12 MW. More than 40 percent of its resources were renewable in 2017, supported by net metering customers who invest in distributed solar energy. As the region grows, the utility notes the need for increased transmission capacity and aging infrastructure replacement, and it has discussed plans such as the Clear Peaks Renewable Energy Program in 2018 to expand renewable options.
