Health Emergency Lifeline Programs, known as HELP, was founded in 1986 when a group of concerned individuals sought to support friends and family affected by AIDS with access to medical care and end-of-life resources. Advances in treatment have extended the lives of many with HIV/AIDS, yet substantial challenges remain for affected individuals. Today HELP focuses on people who are at risk, infected, or affected by HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C, recognizing that stigma and barriers related to health status, sexuality, race, poverty, and discrimination persist, and that factors such as substance use, mental illness, homelessness, and economic hardship complicate care.

The organization operates from Detroit, Michigan, serving Southeast Michigan. Each year HELP supports more than 1,200 individuals and families by delivering a broad mix of services, including food vouchers and nutritional support, nutritional counseling, housing assistance, utility assistance, medical case management, mental health counseling and emotional support, early intervention services, education and skills building, and help accessing medical care, medications, and other benefits. These services address both practical needs and access barriers faced by people affected by HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C.
