It was established in 1944 after residents voted for its creation and was renamed in 1958 to Hayward Area Recreation and Park District, later becoming the largest recreation district in California. The mission is to enrich the community's quality of life by providing a variety of recreation activities, parks, and facilities that promote health and wellness, learning, and fun. The organization has between 51 and 200 employees and maintains a website at haywardrec.org.
