Harmony Labs is a nonprofit research studio based in New York City, New York, that studies media by integrating science, data, and creativity to understand how media shapes public experience and what a healthier relationship with media could look like. For more than a decade, it has supported storytellers, strategists, and decision-makers in using media to advance a more pluralistic and constructive public conversation. Through the Narrative Observatory, the organization provides a data-driven platform that helps partners locate and engage the right audiences, offering audience-based insights, narrative and network analysis, and empirically grounded validation of cultural strategies and content, based on actual behavior rather than surveys or demographic labels. Its work spans climate, gun violence, political corruption, artificial intelligence, and similar existential issues, employing a rigorous, participatory, and public research approach. Outputs range from websites and presentations to peer-reviewed papers, toolkits, curricula, interactives, white papers, and other media products. Founded in 2008 by John S. Johnson, Harmony Labs is a 501(c)3 organization in New York State; in 2026 it announced a collaboration with FrameWorks Institute to advance its research program.
