General Dynamics NASSCO-Norfolk is a ship repair operation based in Norfolk, Virginia, formed through the consolidation of two established yards in the Port of Hampton Roads that have supported the U.S. Navy for decades. Metro Machine Corporation, which began operations in the area in the 1960s and moved to the Ligon Street site in 1971, has worked on more than 450 ships. Earl Industries, founded in 1985 and later relocating to Harper Avenue, has long maintained and repaired aircraft carriers and ships of the Navy's amphibious fleet, including the LPD-17 class; its operations were integrated into General Dynamics NASSCO in 2012. The combined organization expanded its carrier-focused work to Bremerton, Washington in 2014. Primary customers are the U.S. Navy, for whom the company provides repair, maintenance, and modernization of naval vessels, notably aircraft carriers and amphibious ships. In April 2023, the company was awarded a contract to repair, maintain and modernize U.S. Navy aircraft carriers.
