humanID is an open-source sign-in solution developed by the Foundation for a Human Internet, a nonprofit organization. It offers private, secure authentication for apps and websites across iOS, Android, and the web, presenting an alternative to typical social sign-ins while not storing user data by either party. Real users are identified with a randomized identifier derived from hashed phone numbers to deter bots and spam and to support policy enforcement and paywalls that foster civil online communities. The project is based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and is connected to a New York–based nonprofit foundation.
It was founded in 2019 and launched in early 2020 by entrepreneurs seeking to address credibility and accountability online. The initiative targets platforms combating spam, trolls, and bots, and invites developers building products in social media, online media, online communication, and online polling to explore the solution.
