It was created through a collaboration between the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians and KVCR-PBS and launched in 2011. The network reaches an estimated audience of over 18 million viewers in the second-largest U.S. media market via KVCR Channel 24.2. 

Since November 2014, FNX has functioned as a full-time channel on the Public Television Interconnect System, expanding its reach to hundreds of PBS, community, and tribal stations and service providers. It is carried by about 20 affiliate stations across 18 states, providing access to more than 22 million U.S. households. In 2025, FNX announced a new phone app and streaming service to broaden access to Native American content.
