The Finnish Environment Institute (Syke) is a Finnish research organization focused on environmental science and sustainability. It conducts research, provides information, and delivers services to support systemic, society-wide sustainability transformations rather than one-off problem solving. The institute employs around seven hundred experts working from Helsinki and other cities such as Oulu, Jyväskylä, and Joensuu, collaborating with public bodies and academic partners to inform policy and practical environmental management. Operating within the broader research services sector, Syke serves policymakers, researchers, and partner organizations seeking evidence-based approaches to environmental challenges and the green transition. In 2025 it participated in the United Nations Ocean Conference and committed to science-based decision-making for Baltic Sea management; in 2026 it began a collaboration with the University of Oulu on the VISIO project, a regional green-transition monitoring initiative.
